Scripting a new survey (Visual Editor)
- Selecting the Create a new survey button from Studio's main overview page will bring you to the Visual Editor.
- Under the Design tab, you can start scripting your survey. Selecting the first card on the Visual Editor will prompt a dynamic right sidebar to appear, allowing you to select a question type or a logic card type.
Customizing your questions and options
- After selecting a question type you want, fill in the question text and options in the respective fields. (*Note: for options, be sure to press 'Enter' to save the option!)
- Under the question creation sidebar, you would also be able to:
- Enable/ disable images for selected questions (to be added as option thumbnails)
- Enable/ disable the option list to be displayed as a spinner style layout
- Enable/ disable the randomize feature for options in the option list to be randomized for the respective question
Duplicating/ removing question cards
- Under the Tools dropdown in the Visual Editor, you can duplicate or remove question cards (Pro Tip: You may even use the short keys indicated to quickly execute the command!)
Creating and connecting questions together
- To connect one question card to another, hover your mouse over the first question card of the pairing to reveal a blue dot on the right top corner of the card. As the + sign appears in it, click and drag out the blue line link it to the question card that you would like to connect it to. You may also create a new question card by dragging out the blue line into a blank area on the Visual Editor workspace.
- *Note: Question cards that are not linked together would be highlighted in orange and are known as Orphan Cards. Connect the orphan cards to resolve the disconnect.
Managing the routing and question dependency
- A routing/ question dependency is indicated by a pink dotted line, stemming from an option within a question card. To create a new routing/ question dependency, hover over the option you wish to start the routing/question dependency from (this will highlight the option in pink) and pull the pink dotted line to the question card you would like to route this option to.
- *Note: Be sure to always link the respective question card you had created the dependency on back to the main flow if you do not want the survey to end at this particular question card.
Question ordering
- If you have multiple questions being routed from one question, the questions will be shown based on the option ordering of the preceding question.
- In the example below, if a respondent selects “Apples” and “Bananas” in Q3, Q4 will be shown first, followed by Q7.
- For the creation of a question dependency that does not involve to question cards that follow immediately beside each other, you may use the blue line to dictate the question sequence.
- In this example below, a respondent will be shown Q4 first followed by Q5-8, following the sequence denoted by the blue lines in between the question cards, depending on which option was selected in Q3.
Piping options between questions
- You may pipe (i.e. bring in) options from one question card to another within the survey in the Visual Editor.
- Positive piping will bring only options selected in the previous question card to the question card of interest. (*Note: the default behavior for the piping feature is positive piping.)
- Negative piping will bring only options that are NOT selected in the previous question card to the question card of interest. Change the piping to the negative piping by hovering over the orange question number on the dynamic right side pop-up bar and clicking the not that appears.
- (*Note: the negative piping is indicated by the presence of a red dot on the left side of the options listed)
Embedding text within a question text
- While designing the question content, you can embed text based on the option selected in the previous linked question. To embed text within the question content, type in (([question number you wish to adopt the embedded text from])) within the question content.
- You can also customize the embedding of your text with the following commands:
- Embedded Text Syntax: ((questionNumber.<modifier>))
- Modifiers include:
- lowercase - everything in lowercase
- uppercase - everything in uppercased
- capitalized - first letter of word in capital
- join - join all options together with “ , ”
- For example: if a respondent selects McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC:
- ((14.join)) syntax will show “...recent visit to McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC”
- ((14.join)) syntax will show “...recent visit to McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC”

Additions to scripting a survey: Screenout and Quality Checks
- You can also introduce additional aspects to your survey script such as a screenout (i.e. to screen unsuited/ unqualified respondents out from the survey) and quality checks.
